HOW EILEEN POOLE AND THE WISDOM OF DR. HENRY BIELER CHANGED MY LIFE.
My journey on the path to wellness began in 1979 after experiencing many years of health issues. What follows is the story of what led me to that path in the first place.
Sickly and underweight for my entire childhood, my well-meaning mother stuffed me full of cheeses, peanut butter, milkshakes and pastries in efforts to put weight on me. I was plagued by bronchitis which progressed to chronic sore throats and strep infections after my tonsils were removed. Courses of antibiotics were a commonplace occurence 3-4 times a year for me.
At 21, soon after moving to Los Angeles, I started to experience dizzy spells that progressed to a few fainting incidents. My medical doctor did numerous tests and found I was severely hypoglycemic. He prescribed a high protein "hypogylcemic diet" to remedy the condition. Initially the diet did help with the symptoms, so I followed it most of the time.
After nearly 4 years following the above regimen, in addition to the chronic sore throats and bronchitis, I began to experience terrible PMS, crippling menstrual cramps and un-controllable sugar cravings before my period. In desparation, I started to explore natural foods nutrition reading the books of Adele Davis, Bernard Jensen, Paavo Airola and George Ohsawa. Over the next few years, I consulted with several "nutritionists" in Los Angeles who put me on various eating plans ranging from raw foods to macrobiotics along with liberal amount of vitamins and supplements. None of the approachs I tried helped very much with my symptoms and for the first time in my life I began to experience rapid weight fluctuations despite fasting and eating "natural foods". I did not know where to turn next because I thought I was doing the right thing eating whole grain wheat bread, cheese, whole grains, beans, tofu, fresh fruits and veggies... and still felt awful.
One day in the late summer of 1979, my mother called to tell me she had heard about an amazing "psychic/intuitive nutritionist", Eileen Poole, who lived in Los Angeles and had reportedly healed many people of serious illnesses with just natural foods. Although skeptical, I was ready to try just about anything at that point.
During my first session, Eileen told me I was very sensitive to wheat, corn, soy, and dairy as well as being sugar and starch poisoned. She told me that my rapid weight fluctuations were from a "toxic bloat" that developed as a result of these sensitivities. It seems my 3 year stint as a vegetarian, though not appropriate for my body type, had cleared out the protein overage from the high protein diet in my early 20's and now I was "protein deficient".
My initial diet was very spartan indeed, consisting of mostly low starch veggies, steamed and raw, as much Bieler's Soup as I could drink and 2, 6 oz. servings of animal protein a day. I was also to have 1-2 soft boiled eggs at breakfast with steamed veggies. For the next 3 months, no fruits, grains or starchs of any kind were permitted. She also asked me to stop all vitamins and supplements until our next visit.
Since I expressed an interest in learning more about foods and healing, Eileen recommended I read "Food Is Your Best Medicine" and "Dr. Bieler's Natural Way To Sexual Health" both by Dr. Henry Bieler. I devoured the information in both books, reading them cover to cover many times before my next appointment with Eileen . I even made an A-Z binder of Dr. Bieler's "food cures" which I still use for reference.
Within those first few months following Eileen's initial eating plan, the severity of the PMS began to abate along with the debilitating menstrual cramps. During our next session, Eileen widened my diet a bit to include some grains, fruit, and yogurt along with a few supplements appropriate to my condition. After Eileen finished my diet, she asked if I had any other questions. I shared that although I had a job that paid well, I did not feel fulfilled in it and did not know what my life path was at that point. She encouraged me to study the traditional Asian healing art of Jin Shin Jyutsu, telling me that I would eventually share what I had learned with others about natural healing as a profession.
Over the next year, adhering as closely as I could to Eileen's updated diets, my weight stabilized, only varying if I ate wheat, corn or soy products. The chronic sore throats occured occasionally if I ate sugar and my energy became more steady as well. By year 4, following Eileen's dietary guidelines, PMS and menstrual cramps were a thing of the past, revived briefly only if I ate sweets or too much starch.
As a client of Eileen's, it was my experience of Dr. Bieler's wisdom through her life changing work, that inspired me to study nutrition as well as Jin Shin Jyutsu. For the next 13 years, I studied various traditional Asian healing arts, including 2 1/2 years of part time studies in acupuncture school, as well as Jin Shin Jyutsu and deepened my understanding of the role of natural foods in healing.
From 1979 until Eileen retired in April 2011, I would schedule appointments every 3-4 months to refine my diet and to ask questions about foods and natural healing. Her insights and guidance about life in general always kept me on track. In the early years, it was not always easy to stay with Eileen's diets, but gradually as my body came back into balance, the inevitable "falling off the wagon" episodes became less and less frequent. When I later introduced the daily Jin Shin Jyutsu self help routines learned in my certification classes, the sugar cravings just dissappeared.
Now after more than 30 years following Eileen's eating plans, the taste of sugar does not appeal to me anymore, I stay at my ideal weight without thinking about it, and rarely experience even minor illnesses. If I occasionally do, I recover quickly using the tools Jin Shin Jyutsu and Eileen have given me. To this day, I regularly read both Dr. Bieler's books and the notes I transcribed from the sessions I taped with Eileen as her client.
I will be forever grateful to Eileen for helping me to reclaim my health, introducing me to the work of Dr. Henry Bieler, and for planting the seeds of what is now my life's work and passion.
I wish I could thank Eileen Poole and Dr. Bieler in person for saving my life. However, I think they would be proud of me if they knew I have taken what I have learned from them and applied their knowledge to helping others. There are many healing miracles that my clients have experienced from using their incredible information.
My work now is a combination of Jin Shin Jyutsu, traditional Asian medicine, the work of Dr. Elliot Abravanel, Elizabeth Morrison, and Dr. Bieler’s and Eileen Poole’s principles.
I greatly enjoy helping others with these magnificent tools and I consider it my life’s work.
